Prologue 5: Mystery

On the island where Yen Sid's Mysterious tower was located, many magical places were located. These did not exist on the actual tower's spit of land – instead, these places were on their own islands, no more than a hundred yards away from the main island. If one knew where they were, one could use a magical rowboat to go to those islands, and discover the secrets they hid.

It was in one such cave that this last surviving Dusk Nobody survived. It dwelt in a cave filled with sparkling gray crystals. These crystals contained the pure essence of nothingness, which the Dusk had been using as food during the last two years.

It was not sure why it had survived. All remaining Nobodies simply faded away after Xemnas's defeat. This one also had, somehow, managed to escape with its life after Oblivion Souls destroyed its home world, The World that Never Was. Perhaps it was lucky, or perhaps something was watching out for it.

It didn't matter. It could be so lonely being the last one of its species. It didn't actually feel lonely, mind – since Nobodies do not have hearts, they cannot feel actual emotions. Instead, this Dusk was content to simply call on its memories of loneliness in its past life, back when it was a Somebody. But it wasn't real.

The Dusk was laying on its belly, pondering and wondering. There wasn't that much else to do, so it amused itself with thoughts whenever possible.

Not to say that the thoughts were anything special. Dusks and other common Nobodies had very low levels of intelligence, so the thoughts weren't revolutionizing any college courses. The thoughts were very basic: I am a Dusk. The sky is red and orange. The crystals are hard and very gray. Or gray and very hard.

Then, suddenly, a silvery ball of energy flew into the cave mouth, and struck the Dusk in the head. Then something started happening.

The Dusk began transforming.

Painfully.

The Dusk's limbs twisted and lengthened, yet still becoming thicker. Its torso was pulled and stretched, and hunched over at a painful angle. The legs bloated and stretched, sprouting knees and actual ankles. Sharp pains were felt in the hands and feet as digits grew out where there were none before. Finally, the head was squished and pulled, becoming longer and thinner.

The entire process was painful and traumatizing. The Dusk wanted to cry out in pain, but found that it could not during the transformation. When the transformation was finished, it saw no reason to cry out, since the pain had passed.

The Dusk looked around, and noticed a few things. Firstly, it was taller. Much taller. It must have grown about three feet during the transformation. This would take some getting used to.

The second thing it noticed was that its footsteps were a lot heavier. Every time it took a step, it felt as though a small earthquake was happening. Crystals rumbled in their sockets, and stones fell from the ceiling.

Finally, it noticed that it looked different. It saw itself in the reflection of a crystal nearby, and saw for the first time its new appearance.

The Dusk hardly looked like a Dusk anymore – now it resembled a hulking beast. It stood on two thin, angular, muscular legs, with talons that spread around the base of the feet. Its torso was long and triangular, with an exaggerated ribcage, a thin waist, and getting wider up near the top.

Its arms were similarly thin and muscular, with claw-like fingers, a prism shape for the forearms, and a long gray tube for the upper arm. Its shoulders were balls, with curved spikes jutting from the base to form shoulder plates. It had triangular spikes that came from its forearms, as well as ones just like it from its lower legs.

Its head was on a long neck, and its head was triangular, angled, long and thin. Two red diamond-shaped eyes were set on its head, one on each side. Jutting out of the base of the head were four triangle-shaped spikes, two on each side of the head.

When it, or he – the Dusk felt as though he deserved a gender now – saw his new appearance, he was awestruck…yet more than a little shocked.

"Well," said the Dusk in a raspy, medium-pitched voice, "I look a hell of a lot better now than I did before."

Then he realized he had not only formed a coherent sentence…he had spoken it! With words instead of zipper-clicks!

"But," said he, "this is all strange. Why has this happened? How? For what purpose? Things like this don't just happen, no matter how good it is."

The Dusk felt a surge of power inside it. It felt like it was about to do something spectacular.

With a wave of its hand, it created a flash of light gray light. When it faded, there, in front of it…was a Dusk. Another one.

The first Dusk was surprised, and recalled on his emotions of happiness. He was not alone! He…he could create other Nobodies!

"This is amazing!" he shouted in a medium-pitched and raspy voice, "I can create Nobodies! I am just like our brothers in Organization XIII!"

The other Dusk clicked its teeth together, letting know its excitement even though it had no idea what the hell it was supposed to be excited about.

"But wait," said the transformed Dusk, "I will need a name. Something that sets me apart from the other Nobodies."

He pondered for a moment. "Hmmmm…. Well, I know absolutely nothing about myself. I have no past, I have no ideas about the future. I am a blank slate, a nothing. My whole life to this point is a mystery, an…oh, what's that clever word that Vexen used… oh right, enigma."

He pondered this. "Yes…That seems like an appropriate word. Enigma. It's short, it's descriptive, and it's simple. It represents me. It will do."

He looked at the Dusk, who looked back at him expectantly.

"I am Enigma, Commander of the Nobodies. I will rule where our Organization brothers cannot! I AM THE NOBODIES!"

The Dusk was excited, and Enigma was satisfied. He sat down, and began to think some more.
***
Not very far away, two students of Master Yen Sid were taking a walk along the very same island Enigma was on. They were discussing something.

On the left was a young teenage girl, no more than fourteen years old. She was wearing a red tank top, blue shorts, and she had long blonde hair. She looked as though she were from Twilight Town (which she was).

On the right was a young man who looked like a fusion between a man and a wolf. A werewolf. He was not terrifying in the slightest, wearing an orange jacket, brown pants, and black shoes. His fur was gray, and his eyes were gold. He was from Halloween Town.

"So," said the girl, "then Prince Jenkins says 'Oh, don't worry, I'm the son of the king where I come from, so I have a lot of say about who I can sleep with.' Can you believe that, Lupine? He brings up his royalty again!"

Lupine (the werewolf) shook his head and said, "I'm telling you, Skyla, this is why you shouldn't date princes from other worlds."

Skyla shook her head. "So then I had to explain about how the prince's royal say only applied to his father's kingdom. Completely killed the mood."

"Not to mention that you're only fourteen years old!" cried Lupine, "How could he be so insensitive?"
***
Enigma was walking around the crystal cavern. He grasped one of the silvery crystals, plucked it out of its socket, and held it in his hand. It felt lightweight and sturdy in his giant five-fingered hand.

Just then, Enigma felt a surge in his body, almost as if a crashing river flowed through him. He closed his fist, and squeezed against the crystal.

Immediately, fractures formed in the crystal structure. Within seconds, the crystal shattered into a million pieces, releasing dust as it shattered.

Enigma was furious, but remained calm. "Impossible! I don't know much, but I do know that these crystals are the hardest substance known to man! How could it shatter so easily?"

The Dusk, content to drain the energy from a crystal, only shrugged nonchalantly.

Enigma thought, then went to a crystal sticking out of a stalagmite. He grabbed it, felt another surge of power, then squeezed. The crystal cracked, then once again shattered.

"Maybe…maybe it's not that these crystals are so weak. Maybe…maybe it's because I'm so strong."

Enigma looked at the Dusk that was feeding. He got an idea.

"Hey, you. Come here."

The Dusk groaned, then slithered over to him.

Enigma grabbed the tip of its shoulder with his index finger and thumb. Then, feeling a surge again, he squeezed as softly as he could with his might.

The Dusk shrieked as it felt a sharp, crippling pain in its shoulder. Enigma's pinching pierced the light natural armor the Dusk possessed, releasing a stream of quicksilver on both sides of the shoulder.

Enigma immediately stopped. He saw the damage to the Nobody, and though he knew he should, he felt no remorse.

"So, it is true. I am incredibly strong. But only when I allow myself to be. It seems that I can only use that strength for a single swift move, then it fades. Interesting."
***
Lupine and Skyla were still walking, along the shore of the same island.

"All I'm saying," said Lupine, "is that you deserve someone who respects you. Someone who's going to treat you right."

"Oh, I think I'm just going to stop dating for a while," said Skyla sadly.

"No, don't do that! Don't let some spoiled prince ruin dating for you!"

"I've dated five guys. It's always the same thing. Make a good first impression, get into bedroom, sleep, kick out. Repeat. These boys all love with their hormones, not their heart."

Lupine put a hand on her bare shoulder. "You'll find someone who will treat you right. Someone who's fur you can stroke, even."

They continued walking, heading straight for the cave Enigma was in.
***
Enigma was still experimenting. He was walking back and forth, and found that with a surge of power, he could run fast and jump high. (His test for jumping high had ended up with his head in the ceiling. Enigma was powerful, but he wasn't exactly the pinnacle of intelligence – or in terms he knew, "dumb as a Dusk.")

He also could perform powerful kicks, and was just as dexterous with his feet as he was with his hands. He also found that hidden in his ribcage were two extra arms, which, when unfolded in a somewhat painful process, could be used as effectively as his other arms.

He was quite the killing machine.

But what was he supposed to kill? Why was he brought into this world? Why was no one giving him the answers he wanted?

"WHY? WON'T? SOMEONE? TELL ME?!?" he screamed at the top of his lungs, scaring the Dusks, Creepers, and Dancers he had summoned.

He banged the floor of the cave, sending a tremor throughout it. Crystals fell from stalactites, and some of the stalactites themselves even came loose.
***
Lupine was disappointed. He was sure that he was exactly what Skyla needed for a boyfriend, but obviously she wanted him only as a friend. Why were women so damn complicated?

"If you're hurting for things to do," said Lupine hopefully, "maybe after training we could catch a movie or something."

Skyla smiled. "Oh, that's sweet, but I'll be fine. A little dry spell isn't going to kill me."

"We could watch Full Moon's Romance. I hear it got awards for its portrayal of, um…human and werewolf relationships."

"Anyways," said Skyla, "if worst comes to worst, I did have all those, erm…hentai dating sims installed on my personal laptop."

"And I hear that the falling in love montage is one of the…what?"

Skyla smiled again. "Oh yeah! Yen Sid said we can put anything on our laptops, as long as it didn't interfere with training. Here, I've got my laptop now. Let me fire it up…"

Lupine put out a hand to stop her. "Wait. Something's not right. I heard something. Like…a tremor. A rumble."

Skyla was surprised. "I didn't hear anything."

"It's coming from that cave. Let's go take a look."

Skyla shrugged. "Sure, why not?"

And so the two of them headed for the cave. Lupine drew his Decisive Pumpkin Keyblade, and Skyla drew her Hero's Crest Keyblade.
***
Enigma was still rampaging, nearly destroying the cave. It looked like it would collapse on top of him.

Then, all of a sudden, he caught a strange smell in his nose. It smelled like some fragrant metal, mixed with an exotic fruit. It smelled more wonderful than anything he had ever smelled before…though considering the only thing he'd smelt up to this point were Dusks, Creepers, and Dancers, that wasn't saying much.

Whatever the smell was, it overpowered him. The quicksilver inside him boiled, his armor plates itched, and he was focused on a single thing.

"Keyblades," muttered Enigma, somehow knowing exactly what the scent was. He bolted out of the cave, and stopped before what he saw.

He saw a wolf-like creature carrying a Keyblade. The Keyblade had a reindeer-antler guard, a swirling snake with a candy cane coloring for the blade, and the teeth being the teeth of the snake.

The other person was a teenage girl, and she had a Keyblade too. Her Keyblade had two Greek columns for the blade, shorter columns for the guard, and a star for the teeth.

When Enigma saw them, he completely lost control. Summoning his strength, he leapt on top of the girl, and brought his foot down on top of her neck. The girl's neck snapped, and she died right there and then.

The wolf was about to charge at him, but Enigma picked up the Keyblade (Hero's Crest, he knew it was called.), and blocked the wolf's swing. Then he summoned his strength again, and punched him in the chest, sending him flying and colliding with the outside of the cave. He perished immediately.

Enigma picked up that Keyblade too (Decisive Pumpkin, he once again knew), and looked at the both of them, marveling their appearance. He swung them in practice, one in each hand, and tried going into various stances.

"Such wonderfully crafted weapons," he said to no one in particular. Then he looked out to the horizon, and saw a great tower in the distance.

"Maybe the people who live there can give me some answers," Enigma thought hopefully.

With a surge of strength, he leapt high into the air and far enough to get to the next nearby island. He repeated the process, leaping from island to island with his great strength.
***
Nearby, Elmira, a mermaid from Atlantica, saw what happened while she was "swimming" in the air around the island. She hadn't been able to help, though.

She saw that the creature was leaping from island to island…heading straight for Yen Sid's tower!

"Oh no!" thought Elmira, "I've got to warn Master Yen Sid!"

And with that, using a spell she learned so she could swim in the air (Which was how she got around), she headed off as fast as she could to Yen Sid's tower.
The fifth part of the Prologue for Sentinels of Chaos. Here we meet Enigma for the first time, and also we meet some of Yen Sid's students...and promptly lose them.

Enjoy!
